A car loan broker compares offers from multiple lenders to find the right finance for your vehicle. Whether you're buying new, used, or from a private seller. At Better Lending Co, we review 40+ lenders to match your situation with the most competitive rate and structure. The service is free to you as the borrower, with no obligation and no impact on your credit score until you're ready to proceed.
Why Use a Car Loan Broker Instead of Going Direct to a Bank?
When you apply for a car loan directly with your bank, you get one offer, take it or leave it. A broker gives you access to dozens of lenders at once, and more importantly, someone who knows which lender is most likely to say yes to your specific situation at the best rate.
Car finance isn't one-size-fits-all. Your employment type, credit history, the vehicle you've chosen, whether it's from a dealer or a private seller, all of these factors determine which lenders are right for you. A broker does the matching before any application is lodged, protecting your credit file and saving you time.
At Better Lending Co, an experienced broker will handle your car loan from the first conversation to the day the keys are in your hand. No junior staff. No call centre.
REAL STAT → More than one in two Australians now use a broker for their car loan. Broker-originated car finance has grown significantly over the past five years as borrowers realise direct bank applications often don't deliver the most competitive terms. (MFAA, 2025)
Car Finance Options, which one is right for you?
The right car loan structure depends on whether you're buying for personal use or business, and how you want to manage repayments. Here's a plain-English guide:
-
The standard loan for individuals buying a car for personal use. You borrow a fixed amount, make regular repayments over 1–7 years, and own the car from day one. Fixed interest rate means repayments don't change. A secured loan, the car acts as security, which is why rates are lower than personal loans.
Best for: individuals buying a car for personal use — commuting, family, lifestyle
Loan terms: 1–7 years
-
If you're buying a vehicle for business use and have an ABN, a chattel mortgage (also marketed by banks as a business car loan, equipment loan or ABN loan) is almost always the better structure for one reason - tax.
You own the car from day one, can claim the GST upfront on your next BAS, deduct the interest component of repayments, and, from 1 July 2026, permanently claim the $20,000 instant asset write-off for eligible vehicles under that threshold. These tax benefits are not available on a standard consumer car loan.
Best for: tradies, sole traders, SME owners, any business use over 51% of the time
Tax benefits: GST claim, interest deduction, instant asset write-off on eligible vehicles
-
A novated lease lets you pay for your car, including running costs, using pre-tax salary, arranged through your employer. It's one of the most tax-effective ways to own a vehicle if your employer offers salary packaging.
Electric vehicles have a particularly strong novated lease advantage. The government has maintained concessional FBT treatment for EVs, though the rules changed in the 2026-27 Budget. From April 2027, the full FBT exemption applies only to EVs under $75,000, with a 25% FBT discount applying to higher-priced eligible EVs. Existing leases are not affected.
Best for: employees whose employer offers salary packaging; particularly strong for EVs under $75,000
Requires: an employer willing to participate in a novated lease arrangement
-
mortgage in many cases, and off-balance-sheet treatment available. At the end of the term you can purchase the vehicle at the residual value, upgrade to a new model, or hand it back.
Best for: businesses wanting to upgrade vehicles regularly without owning them; lower repayment preference
Note: the instant asset write-off does NOT apply under a finance lease, the lender owns the car, not you

PRIVATE SALE TIP → Many buyers don't realise they can finance a car bought from a private seller, not just a dealership. The process is slightly different and fewer lenders offer it, but it's absolutely available. Better Lending Co can help identify which lenders are best for private sale finance.
The Process
How it works
01
Tell us about the car
Share the vehicle details — new or used, dealer or private seller, price and any other specifics. No forms at this stage. A short conversation is all we need to get started.
02
We find the right lender
We compare 40+ lenders and identify who is most likely to approve your loan on competitive terms for your specific vehicle. No application submitted at this stage — no credit impact.
03
Application and approval
One application to one well-matched lender. Many personal car loans are approved same day. Business car loans and private sales typically settle within 3–5 business days.
04
Keys in hand
Funds go directly to the dealer or private seller. For private sales, we coordinate the payment so the handover is clean and documented. We stay accessible for every future car loan, refinance or upgrade.
What do you need to apply?
For most equipment and vehicle loans the list is short. Working capital and larger loans ask for a little more but we will advise you on any additional requirements.
Personal car loan
- Driver's licence
- Vehicle details — make, model, year, VIN or registration number, asking price
- Proof of income — recent payslips (PAYG) or last 2 years of tax returns (self-employed)
Business car loan (chattel mortgage)
- Driver's licence
- ABN — if you have one
- Vehicle details — make, model, year and asking price
TIP → Get pre-approved before you start shopping. You don't need to have a car in mind to get started. We can assess your borrowing capacity upfront so you know your budget before you approach a dealer or private seller. Pre-approval typically takes 24–48 hours and has no impact on your credit file.
Things people usually ask.
-
Yes. Private sale car finance is available, the process is slightly different from dealer finance, and fewer lenders offer it, but it's absolutely achievable. The vehicle typically needs to be under a certain age and kilometre threshold, and some lenders require a roadworthy check or independent valuation. Cameron knows which lenders specialise in private sale finance.
-
A formal loan application creates a credit inquiry, which can slightly reduce your score. This is why we review your situation first and only submits to one well-matched lender. A single application to the right lender is far better for your credit file than multiple applications to unsuitable ones. Checking your options with a broker has no impact on your credit score.
-
A consumer car loan is for personal use, no specific tax benefits beyond standard debt deductions. A chattel mortgage (also called a business car loan or ABN loan) is for business use and offers significant tax advantages: claim the GST upfront, deduct interest, and claim the instant asset write-off on eligible vehicles. If you have an ABN and use the vehicle primarily for work, a chattel mortgage is almost always the better financial structure.
-
It depends on the nature of the credit issue. Minor blemishes or older defaults are often workable with specialist lenders. Undischarged bankruptcy or very recent serious defaults are harder. The first step is reviewing your credit report, we can do this at no cost and with no credit impact, to understand what's on file and which lenders are likely to approve your application.
-
Yes. Self-employed borrowers have more options than ever. Lenders assess you on cash flow and business trading history rather than just payslips. For business vehicles, a chattel mortgage requires your ABN and usually 3 months of business bank statements. For personal vehicles, some lenders accept tax returns, and others offer low-doc options based on bank data. We specialise in solutions for self-employed clients.
-
A balloon payment is a lump sum you agree to pay at the end of the loan term, typically 20–40% of the original amount borrowed. It reduces your monthly repayments throughout the loan, but leaves a larger amount owing at the end. You can pay it out in cash, refinance it, or use the trade-in value of the vehicle. We will model both options (with and without balloon) so you can see the total cost of each.
-
Yes, highly recommended. A pre-approval gives you a confirmed borrowing limit before you visit dealers or inspect private sale vehicles. This puts you in a much stronger negotiating position and means you can move quickly when you find the right car. We can arrange a pre-approval that's typically valid for 30–90 days.
